Milkingpen Lane

PROJECTS / Private Residential

This bespoke home office and garage is set within the garden of a Grade II listed cottage in the Conservation Area of Old Basing in Hampshire. The new building meets the client’s varied needs by providing a modern office space and storage room coupled with a garage that opens up to provide a sheltered play area for the family’s two young children.

The structure was inspired by the simple geometry of barns from the local area and, although contemporary, the simple design does not detract from the historic cottage. The building is made of a lightweight timber frame, featuring an open slatted envelope that folds open to reveal the garage and play area, while the office space is entered through large glazed sliding doors.

The simple form, use of minimal detailing and a simple palette of materials emphasise the quality of craftsmanship.
