AJ Architecture Awards 2017

The Point

7 September 2017

The Point has been shortlisted for the inaugural AJ Architecture Awards 2017, in the Community & Faith Project of the Year category.

The two-storey youth club was designed in close collaboration with the young people of Tadley and provides a place for the whole community to gather. The project houses two multi-purpose halls, music room and recording studio, café and a series of activity pods and break-out spaces. The roof, with its dark folded ‘cloak’ appearance, gives the building a contemporary edge while internally a series of uplifting spaces create an environment the young people want to use every day.

The shortlisting continues the Point’s recent award success. The project was this year’s RIBA Journal MacEwen Award winner and was also awarded an RIBA Regional Award.

The winners for the AJ Architecture Awards will be announced at an exclusive Gala Dinner at the Grosvenor House Hotel in December.

Winner!

RIBAJ MacEwen Award

31 January 2017

We are delighted that The Point, a new youth centre in Tadley, has won the RIBA Journal MacEwen Award! The MacEwen Award celebrates the best examples of architecture for the common good.

‘It’s not easy getting a youth building right – with the right facilities, in the right materials – without appearing condescending or big-brotherish. This is one of the things that commended The Point to this year’s MacEwen judges. And on the day I went to see the place with architects David Ayre and Dominic Gaunt, along with their client, youth leader Adrian Noad, my immediate response was – this doesn’t feel like a youth club at all. It’s more like a Grand Designs-style house…

By the standards of many of its present projects, The Point is relatively small. But the practice poured a lot of time and energy into it, and – as the MacEwen judges noticed – it shows.’

The Point, a new two-storey, 410m2 youth centre that was designed in collaboration with the young people of Tadley, was recently featured in Dezeen.

The Point is truly a project for the community and by the community. The young people worked in collaboration with us to develop the design and their ideas and aspirations were brought to life through the town’s residents who voted to have an uplift on their own council tax charge to help fund the project – for every £1 contributed by Tadley Council taxpayers, the Tadley & District Community Association secured an additional £2.88 in grants or donations towards the project.
